Control Unit for critical potential tubes

The Critical Potential Tube is for use in the Gustav Hertz Experiment, a development of the Franck-Hertz Experiment. Filled with either helium or neon, the tube allows one to investigate the inelastic collisions of electrons with inert gas atoms.

The Control Unit for Critical Potential Tubes enables you to operate this tube. It is equipped with an output for saw tooth acceleration voltages and adjustable upper and lower limits of the acceleration voltage. The integrated pico-ammeter amplifier for anode current measurement allows recording of the acceleration voltage as a function of the anode current.

Furthermore, a slow saw tooth voltage (approx. 6 seconds per cycle) is available with an interface or XY-recorder; a saw tooth voltage with a repetition rate of 20Hz is available for oscilloscopic observations.

The Control Unit comes complete with plug-in power supply, ready for use.

  • Input: anode current measurement via a BNC jack
  • Outputs:
    • Tube: saw tooth acceleration voltage of 0 - 60V, 20Hz
    • Fast: voltage signal of 0 - 1V proportional to the acceleration voltage, for oscilloscopic observations
    • Slow: voltage signal of 0 - 1V proportional to the acceleration voltage, for recording data with an XY-recorder or interface
    • Anode current: voltage signal of 0 - 1V proportional to the anode current (1V/ nA)
    • Supply voltage: 12V AC
