Helmholtz Resonator

The Helmholtz Resonator is a hollow glass bulb with a narrow tube leading out for demonstrating acoustic resonance. The fundamental oscillation is generated by blowing into the opening or banging on the outside of the bulb.

The elasticity and inertial mass of the air in the bulb cause it to act as an acoustic resonator with a highly distinct resonant frequency. This frequency is dependent on the dimensions of the bulb and the tube, a variety of which may be chosen from. With a whole set of Helmholtz resonators it is possible to demonstrate how tones combine to form a tonal mixture.

The Helmholtz Resonator is available in four different diameters, each producing different frequencies. Select your desired size using the drop-down menu above.

Four Diameters and Frequencies

Each of the four sizes of resonator produces a different frequency. These frequencies are as follows:

  • 34mm: 1440 Hz
  • 40mm: 1202 Hz
  • 52mm: 740 Hz
  • 70mm: 440 Hz


  • Opening on the glass bulb: 14mm diameter
  • Length of tube: 15mm
  • Resonant Frequency: 440Hz
